Sex Education Essay

As highly controversial and problematic matters, Sex and sex affairs should be taught and in fact intensified in school so as to prepare the teens as future adults and more so parents. The current social settings make teenagers to interpret education as a hindrance, old fashioned and ineffective. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Sex Education specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These current social settings deprive them the correct information, which may later come to haunt them with early pregnancies and other bigger problems such as sexually transmitted diseases. Increasing sex education will be preparing young people to be responsible, as they will have knowledge on sex and sex matters. As much as we would teach abstinence education, it would also be important to teach safe sex education to those teenagers who feel they cannot abstain. Such education would entail lessons on birth control measures such as avoiding multiple sex partners, use of condoms during intercourse and guide them on where to obtain condoms and how to use them. This will help a lot not only in curbing teenage pregnancies but other complications for instance problems associated with sexually transmitted diseases. Through proper education, a teenager will know that having unprotected sex will lead to pregnancy or contact of sexually transmitted diseases and therefore he/she will take precautions. It would be sad if we continue acting blindly, refusing to see that the rate of teenage pregnancies is on the rise. We continue to say that teenagers are taught all they need to know about sex in schools. Increasing sex education to our youngster and especially girls is crucial in curbing teenage pregnancies. If a teenage girl has the right information about her menstrual circle and wants to have sex without using condoms and contraceptives, she will time her safe period so as to engage in sex intercourse. At the same time she will have in mind that having sex without protection is recipe for contracting STIs. Denying a teenager such an important piece of information will mean that we will be responsible for his/her mistakes. A teenager armed with information will be able to decide actions to take, bearing in mind the consequences of his or her actions.Advertising Looking for essay on education? This should be another reason why sex education should be increased in schools. A teacher will not find any problem at all while dem onstrating or talking to teens about sex issue. It would be arguably inappropriate to continue advocating for abstinence programs only, while the out come of it is more teenage pregnancies. Teenagers are human beings with hormones and feelings. They know a lot about sex, only that the information they have is wrong. For examples, some teens believe that you cannot be pregnant if you have sex in a swimming pool. Demystifying this and other silly myths known to teenagers by teaching them facts that they need to know about sex would help a lot. Abstaining is the best way to go but as soon as teenagers get out of the class and hit a party, it evaporates from their mind and any information on safe sex would be important at such situations. Teenage sex is nowadays becoming an in thing or a trend among teenagers all over the world and unless we change our approach towards sex, the rising number of teenage pregnancies will continue being the order of the day. The Sea Inside Essays

The Sea Inside Essays The Sea Inside Paper The Sea Inside Paper The Sea Inside The film The Sea Inside shares the heart warming real life story of a man named Ramon Sampedro. At the young age of twenty-six he suffered an accident while diving into shallow waters of the ocean that left him a quadriplegic. Now at the age of fifty-four, Ramon must depend on his family to survive. His older brother Jose, Jose’s wife, Manuela and their son Javi do their best to take care of Ramon and make him feel loved. Although Ramon is extremely grateful to his family and friends for their help all these years, he has come to see his life as aggravating and unsatisfying. He wishes to die with the little dignity he has left in his life. However, Ramon’s family is dead set against the thought of assisted suicide and the laws of their country would incriminate anyone who helped Ramon end his on life. Through his friend Gene who works with a â€Å"Right to Die† organization, Ramon is introduced to Julia; a lawyer he hopes will help him persuade the courts to let him end his own life. Julia is dealing with her own degenerative disease of CADASIL syndrome, and Ramon hopes her condition will make her arguments more persuasive. Ramon finds himself falling in love with Julia, but he still remains convinced that the greatest gift to him would be an end to his life. In the end, the courts did not rule in his favor, but Ramon was able to end his life by drinking potassium cyanide. Many people around the world suffer their whole lives without being able to live life to the fullest due to degenerative diseases or in cases like Ramon, an accident has left them bedridden and in need of constant outside care. Almost all of the people in these cases have at some point contemplated the ideas of assisted suicide or euthanasia. Euthanasia can be described as the act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness by lethal injection or medical treatment. Similarly, assisted suicide can be broadly defined as the process in which a physician provides a competent, terminally ill patient with the proper means to elicit fatality, upon the patient’s request. In other words euthanasia is intentionally causing the death of a person to relieve them from suffering or pain and assisted suicide is helping the person kill him or herself. The main difference between euthanasia and assisted suicide is that in assisted suicide the patient is in complete control of the process that leads to death because he or she is the person who performs the act of suicide. The other person simply helps provide the means for carrying out the action. However, in euthanasia the patient is not causing his or her own death. I believe that the film, The Sea Inside, provides us with an example of assisted suicide. Ramon wanted it to be a case of euthanasia, but lost that battle when he took it to the courts. So he was left with no choice but to find the means to end his own life. With the help of his friends, he was able to get a hold of potassium cyanide and by drinking it he was able to take his own life. The argument supporting assisted suicide often begins with the amount of pain and suffering that could be saved from conditions that complement a slow, deteriorating and agonizing prognosis. Although many people support the idea of the patients right to choose their fate, others argue that assisted suicide shamefully degrades the value we put on life. But the question remains, when is it acceptable to support the patients’ wishes and when is it not? In the case of Larry McAfee, I believe that his wishes to end his life should have been granted. McAfee became a quadriplegic at a young age after a horrible motorcycle accident injured his C1 and C2 vertebrae. He lived in his quadriplegic condition for many years before deciding that he didn’t want to live life like this anymore. I believe that McAfee was completely competent enough to make that decision on his own after living in that state for so long and exhausting all the possibilities of living comfortably. In the end, he was granted the permission for assisted suicide, and although he chose not to end his life, I believe that the choice should have always been his to make. However, in cases similar to Dax Cowart I do not think that assisted suicide should be granted. Cowart was a twenty nine year old that suffered third degree burns from a car accident. Immediately after his accident he want to kill himself because he could not bare the pain anymore, but his mother overruled that decision and forced him to fight for his life. Although the recovery process was an unimaginably painful and grueling experience, Cowart fought through it and ended up becoming a lawyer, getting married and living a good life. In the initial moment of pain and suffering I do not think that one is capable or competent enough to make such decisions of ending his or her life. Therefore in cases like Cowarts’, I do not believe one should be granted such wishes, unless they have lived with the condition and have exhausted every possible way of living life to its full potential, like in the case of McAfee. The case of Ramon Sampedro from the film is quite similar to the case of Larry McAfee. Both Ramon and Larry were involved in accidents at a young age that left them bedridden quadriplegics. After living life in such conditions for many years, I believe that Ramon, like Larry, was competent enough to make the decision of whether or not he wanted to take his own life and be free from suffering. Overall, I feel as though there is no good or right answer to the assisted suicide debate because of the subjective nature of the topic. However, I do believe that everyone has a right to freely make choices upon being deemed â€Å"competent†. In cases like Larry Macafee and Ramon Sampedro from the film, the choice should be theirs since they are both clearly competent and have experienced life with their condition for many years. However, in cases such as Dax Cowart, competent decisions cannot be made immediately after such accidents because the person is in such pain that they are not thinking clearly. In the end, I believe the debate on assisted suicide is strictly personal and is dependent on many factors such as each person’s own morals, views on life and personal suffering experiences.

The Goddess Tara in Buddhist Art Research Paper - 1

The Goddess Tara in Buddhist Art - Research Paper Example Though not explicitly mentioned anywhere, Tara’s rise did pave the way for more active involvement of women in Buddhist society. Women began to find a say in matters that up until then had primarily been the dominion of men. Goddess Tara was considered as an enlightened role model within the Buddhist tantra. According to folklore, â€Å"Tara was born out of the tears of Lord Buddha†(Santhanam, 2005) In tantric literature, she is the first female Buddha. Tara follows a tradition of strong female role models, starting in the ancient Vedic period and continuing through early Mahayana times. Some of the duties that Tara performs are similar to those of her contemporaries like Goddess Prajnaparamita. Goddess Tara is also associated with an ancient star cult that provided help to seafarers lost at sea. It is also interesting to note that ‘Tara’ means star in Sanskrit. She is also considered to protect humans from nature’s fury including ocean waves, floods , fires, epidemics, etc. With time she has also come to be regarded as a guide to achieve Moksha, which is the Sanskrit word for enlightenment. Tara emerged as Goddess during a time when Buddhist society was mainly patriarchal. Her manner of presentation was similar to those of male bodhisattvas of earlier times. Tara is unbiased in guiding all â€Å"motherly† sentient beings and helps extricate them from the ocean of suffering. She has got rid of all actions deemed morally wrong and has also gotten over her attachment towards worldly pursuits. â€Å"As a Bhagavati, Tara is a female Buddha who is spontaneously present, totally living in the moment without getting bothered by thoughts of the past or the future†. (Landesman, 2008)Tara has many dimensions to her state of being, and this is visually depicted in paintings on cloth and powdered colours on flat surfaces. She is at times a golden goddess who showers prosperity on her worshippers and also protects

The Effects of the governmental mandatory furlough policy on employees Essay

The Effects of the governmental mandatory furlough policy on employees in Michigan - Essay Example These policies additionally state that employees who are not subject to any collective bargaining contracts when being employed are also subject to abrupt dismissal from employment (Morris, 2005). However, the employees may lay claims against discrimination in their employment on civil rights grounds. Discrimination based on gender, race, age, disability or religions has been prohibited by the federal and state laws in America (Schoeni, 2010). These laws state that the employers may dismiss employees who violate the lawful discharge of their duties, refuse to violate a law in the course of their employment or as an exercise of the rights that have been conferred on them (Kingdon & Thurber, 2010). Furlough programs that are mandatory within the state of Michigan have been implemented for the purpose of addressing the budget shortfalls that have faced the city (Bureau of National Affairs, 2009). There are employers who are legible for the mandatory furlough programs from the government while others are ineligible (Morris, 2005). There are several disadvantages and advantages that the employees within the state of Michigan have encountered due to the mandatory furlough programs that the government has introduced. An employee may take any benefits that have been accorded to him without being interrupted by the days that have been set for mandatory furlough. In addition, their health and dental insurances are also unaffected by these mandatory days (Kingdon & Thurber, 2010). The employees within the state of Michigan are allowed to receive holiday pays under these mandatory programs as though they were performing their regular duties at the workplace (Bureau of National Affairs, 2009). The time that employees serve on mandatory furlough is considered as though they were on regular duty when their benefits under their life insurance schemes are being

Concept of Hope in Nursing

Concept of Hope in Nursing INTRODUCTION The aim of this assignment is to explore the concept of hope, which has a great significance in nursing practice, and how this concept relates to the patient care provision will also be discussed. Hope is vital for everyone, and is an inner power or expectations of something better outcomes from any situation. Hope could be renewed with the restoration of peoples confidence in themselves, their government, and the future, hope does not depend on facts or logic, nor can it simply be ordered into being, although it can be encouraged (Parse 1999). Hope is a powerful thing which gives energy to the life, to achieve goals and perditions of better life. DEFINIING THE CONCEPT Hope is defined by many authors in their own views. Some of the definitions will be undertaken to understand the concept of hope precisely in this piece of work. Hope is defined as an essential but dynamic life force that grows out of faith in God, is supported by relationship, resource and work, and results in the energy necessary to work for a desired future; Hope gives meaning and happiness (Holt 2000).It means that hope is an important part of life, and it forces the life believe in the trust. The relationship, work, and resources also support it. Hope plays a vital role to improve the patients condition and nurses utilize this concept by using their efficient nursing skills. A nurse must have to understand that how unique and different is every individual before applying this concept to motivate their inner power to believe in this concept of hope. Hope has a meaning and provides happiness. According to Miller and Powers (1988) hope is defined as an anticipation of a future whic h is good, based on mutuality (relationships with others), a sense of personal competence, coping ability, psychological well being, purpose and meaning in life, and a sense of the possible. Therefore, the concept of hope is a part of future which is very important for the better and successful life. It is based on various aspects including need to equality, means the relationship with others, personal ability and coping ability to gain planned objectives. It has a purpose and meaning in life and there is need to physical as well as psychological well being to achieve the desired result. There is also need to develop positive attitude and a feeling of possibility. Nowotny (1989) concluded that hope is a multidimensional dynamic attribute of an individual which includes six critical attribute: future oriented, active individual involvement, comes from within, related to trust, that which is hoped for is possible, involves other people or a higher being, outcome is important to the i ndividual. A person having hope has the characteristics of multilayered elements which involves six significant traits which means a person must set goals for his/her future and should develop active individual involvement physically as well as psychologically, It also correlate the person to faith which is very necessary for the possibility of hope. According to Farran et al. (1992) hope is defined as expectation about attaining some desired goal in the future, a necessary condition for action, a subjective state that can influence realities to come, and knowledge that we can manage our internal and external realities. It is a required circumstance for the action of planned goals. It is a fact which deals with the inner and outer veracity of a person. Default and Martocchio (1985) stated that hope is defined as a multidimensional dynamic life force characterized by a confident yet uncertain expectation of achieving a future good which, to the hoping person is realistically possible and personally significant. Hope is a strong positive feeling, which is related to the achievement of the goals that are established for better future. According to Snyder et al. (1991) hope is defined as a cognitive set that is based on reciprocally derived sense of successful agency (goal directed determination) and pathway (planning of ways to meet goals). Therefore, hope is an intellectual set up which depends on the sense to achieve desired goals and objectives of life. It is a way to achieve the desired objectives by well planning that includes all the methods which are going to follow. RELEVANCE OF THE CONCEPT TO PRACTICE In nursing, hope has a significant role. When a nurse gives care to the patient he/she encourages the patient to think positively by using this concept of hope. It is only hope which motivates the individuals to be positivistic towards life. This will help them to maintain good interpersonal relationship as well as it accelerates the healing process. Mickley et al. (1992) considered that a multidimensional dynamic attribute of an individual which includes the dimensions of possibility and confidence in the future outcome, active involvement which comes from relations with others and spiritual beliefs. In this, the concept of hope has multidimensional characteristics involving possibilities and confidence. This can be only achieved by the interaction with others. Here the role of a nurse is to instill hope in the patient and build confidence and motivate to perceive life positively. According to Herth (1989) Hope is a source of energy, enabling healthy coping, and influencing survival , it is positive relationship between level of hope and level of coping in the individual. The author suggests that the terms hope and coping are inter-related with each other. It has good relationship with coping and expecting. When this concept is utilized in nursing, the nurses have to consider each patients needs and cope up with their expectations and disease process. It can further result in good patient outcome. The concept of hope has great impact on the role of nurse and patient care. Hope is a motivation for the nurses which relate them for their active involvement in the work (Kulig 2002). A good working environment promotes both nurse and patient to work together. Hope is also relevant for the nurses who give palliative care to the patients (Feudtner et al. 2007). Nurses play vital role in encouraging the patients to take part in the effective management. According to Snyder (1998) hope is build upon the principle that a good deal of everyday behavior is goal directed to wards the patient care. It means that good behavior of the nurses plays an important role while giving care to the patient. Good communication with the patient by nurses can foster a positive hope, which may provide an effective way to achieve the goal. There are some barriers of hope which come forward when this concept of hope put in nursing practice. According to Jackson, et al. (2000) barriers in hope are difference in spiritual beliefs, lack of knowledge, language and communication, economical factors, lack of trust about healthcare system and accepting hospice is perceived as giving up hope. Every individual may have different views on their spirituality, lack of knowledge about disease condition withdraw a nurse to develop hope in the patient. Language and communication also can be the major barrier to motivate hope in patient. Moreover, nurses can also promote the hope in patient with good communication and motivate the patient by giving proper explanation regarding the dise ase process, its treatment and recovery. So, a nurse must have good communication skills as well as she should be a good listener. Economical barriers also affect the quality of care. Due to the financial problems one cannot afford the facilities that can be provided in good hospitals. Furthermore, different language and customs of patients can also hinder the application of the concept of hope in the nursing practice. Therefore, it is essential to know the significance of hope in nursing as well as to understand the barriers of concept in order to deliver a quality of care to the patient. CONCLUSION To sum up, in this piece of work the concept of hope, its various perspectives and characteristics have been analyzed. Moreover, its relevance in patient care in nursing practice were identified in this framework. It is obvious from above analysis that hope has a crucial role in nursing practices and in ones life. It has a great influence in the coping mechanism of the patient from illness. Nurse assumes a primary role while giving care to the terminally ill patient. Finally, Hope is a multidimensional process which boosts the patient actively to takes part in the process related to their care and for the welfare of their health.

Teenage Abortions

Charlene Mays Professor H. English 1C 23 March 2010 Risk in Teenage Abortions Teenagers should not be allowed to have abortions. There are too many risk; abortions can cause young women infertility, meaning they will not be able to have kids. Young women young women have to deal with extreme fetal pain during an abortion process; there is also the probability that some can die right there on the table and have drastic changes in there hormones. Studies have proven that abortions can lead to an increased chance of breast cancer, Pelvic Inflammatory disease, and the contraction of Viral Hepatitis due to excessive bleeding and complications. We as teenagers also need to learn to grow up and take care of our responsibities Teen abortions is legal in almost every state, although some require parental or guardian permission. Abortion is the prevention of an innocent life, which is allowed without permission in over 20 states. I feel that teenage abortions should be banned from all stats even the ones with parent permission because sometimes a parent can force a child to have an abortion. Many women do not see a problem with abortion because according to them, a fetus is just cells. A fetus is more than just cells, it is a human being. Eighteen days after conception, doctors have detected the unborn child’s beating heart. Forty-five days after conception, brain waves have been detected. By three months, all body systems are present and functioning. All of these things occur in the first trimester and ninety-five percent of abortions are performed during the first trimester. What would you do if you accidentally got a young female pregnant, would you handle your responsibilities, or would you take the easy way out and get the abortion? Each and everyday teenagers all over the world are making the decision of taking the easy way out. Now days the way to bail out of having a child is to get an abortion. then you’ll never have to worry about diapers, and milk. When you handle your responsibilities you get the enjoyment of raising you own and being there for a younger one that will look up to you for the rest of there life. As a teenagers having an abortion can impact your life forever whether you decide to abort or give birth. Most teenagers find them selves in a hard position when a child is on its way of being born. eenagers begin to panic and think of all the things that they will miss out on in life, because of a child being born. Your friends and peers around you will either support you or start to dislike you in terms of your decision to get rid of a living fetus. Once any teenager its not like it can be undone the baby is already dead. All teenagers should take there time and really think about it before they go and get this process done. Abortions can cause young girls to have infertility in there futures. Whether you choose to keep your baby, put the baby up for adoption or have an abortion, hormones run crazy when you are pregnant. As you feel the life inside you start to grow, you become attached to it, or perhaps even angry with this new life. Sometimes teens even try to kill themselves because they don’t want to go though the abortion process. Some parents force teenagers to get abortions so that it doesn’t look bad on them and ruin their daughters lives. Responsibility is a big thing in raising a child without responsibility you find your self wanting to take the unborn life away. The issue of abortion has divided the country. However, there is an issue that we can all come to agree and that is a genuine reluctance of our society to take responsibility. The truth is that the majority of abortions do not occur because of the raping of a woman, incest, or potential loss of the mother's life. So why do they occur so often? They occur because people realize that they do not want to have a child for a number of different reasons from an inability to afford one to the potential change it causes to the female body. Nonetheless, the decision is not made because of the fear of the mother losing her life or any of the predominant explanations for the occurrence of abortions. At the root of the occurrence of so many abortions is the inability of individuals in society to take responsibility for their actions. Bearing children is the natural result of sexual intercourse under favorable conditions, it is not forced upon women by the United States government. I am forced to wonder: If a woman has a history of bad decisions which cause her an unwanted pregnancy, why should our society trust her to take the welfare of the child into account and trust her not make the abortion decision? Still, though it is clear that women have made choices that put them in the position of being pregnant, it is worthwhile to repeat a few reasons why abortion is an abhorrent murder of a baby. When a teenager gets pregnant there young bodies open up to a lot of diseases. They can contract Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, and the contraction of Viral Hepatitis due to excessive bleeding and complications. There is a possibility that teenagers can die on the table or to have drastic fetal pain. During the abortion process teenagers will feel excessive cramping as the excess blood discharges from the body. Teenagers may also contract Bacterial vaginosis which is one of the most common vaginal infections that occur in women today in the United States. Also a teenager can mess up her body by getting abortion that she can have a handicapped newborn in later on wanted pregnancies. Abortion is associated with cervical and uterine damage which may increase the risk of premature delivery, complications of labor and abnormal development of the placenta in later pregnancies. Complications are the leading causes of handicaps among newborns. Compared to women who abort teenagers who abort are two to four times more like to commit suicide. Teens are more likely to have psychological and relationship problems. Studies have shown that the major factors in pregnancy decision making among teens are the attitude of the teens parents, the baby’s father, and friends; the personality of the girl herself. A young girls mind can be messed up, this physical effect may cause her to feel an emotional emptiness she have never felt before. Less frequent side effects include possible heavy or prolong bleeding, blood clots, damage to the cervix and the uterus. Infection due to retain products of conception or infection caused by an STD or bacteria being introduced to the uterus can cause fever, pain. Abdominal tenderness and possibly scared tissue. All extreme things that you can die from. Teen abortion kills an innocent life. You exist because your mother chose to give birth to you. Personally I believe abortion is wrong and is definitely not a decision a teenager should have to make at all. Abortions should be band from society because we all need to grow up and take care of our responsibilities. Yea you might get pregnant, and you might not be ready but that doesn’t give you the right to kill an innocent life. Just think God has sent you down a soon to be beautiful baby, there are a lot of people that are unfortunate and have to adopt. Whether it is physical harm to the body or the religious point of view, there are two many risk with abortions in general.
